With the riots seemingly not reaching their end, members of the public have taken matters into their own hands in defence of business infrastructure.
Many have taken a strong stance against the happenings surrounding the civil unrest that have resulted in the extensive damage of property as a consequence of looting, and the endangerment of the lives of citizens caught in the crossfire. Those such people have taken ground action to aid in the prevention of further damage.
The DA has presented themselves as standing in opposition to the uproar, using phrases like "Say No To Looting" and hashtags such as "#NOTOLOOTING" and "#LootingIsNotProtesting" to express their opposition on social media. DA Gauteng Provincial Leader, Solly Msimanga also shared a statement saying; "Let's take hands and unite in peace while we protect each other's lives and livelihoods" in reference to the riots.
DA supporters responded to the call to protect those in need of protection, taking to Maponya Mall in Soweto to defend the "township economy" as said by Dr. NV Khumalo, a DA supporter who deems the riots as "criminality being disguised as protests".
