Child Support Grant Has Reportedly Its Lost Value

The Child support grant has lost its value over the past few years according to The 2021 September Household Affordability Index. The report has further indicated that there has been minimal effort to address poverty in the country.

This is particularly the case with the current child support grant which is reported to have lost much of its value due to inflation over the past years.

Mervyn Abrahams from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group explains that this is in part due to the fact that the grant, as well as household wages, are not able to keep up with rising inflation.

We are seeing this gap between what we should be having, what things cost and the amount of money we have to purchase those is ever-widening and we see that in the starkest way with the child support grant, which is standing at R460 while the latest food-poverty line shows that a child would need a minimum of R620 for sufficient nutrition.

The report further shows that the more suitable figure on a month to month basis was R747,30 in August 2021 and decreased by R10.42 to R736,88 in September 2021.

Abrahams further states that according to StatsSA, food makes up about 15% of South Africa's Consumer Price Index. He also points out their report shows that low-income households spend about 60% of their income on food, which indicates that they are most impacted by inflation fluctuation.

He also goes on to point out that the country's upper-bound poverty line is R135, which is the amount that every South African needs on a monthly basis to live above the poverty line.
