During the transporting of prisoners from Pietermaritzburg prison to the Magistrate court, 18 prisoners escape, as the police truck got ambushed.
The people of Pietermaritzburg are now searching for18 prisoners who escaped as this police truck got forced off the road.
The truck was transporting 45 prisoners to the Magistrate's court when a double cab bakkie with two people inside pushed them off the road and held them at gun point.
They then pried the truck door open releasing 45 prisoners.
Thankfully, though it is still a high number, only 18 managed to escape, with many of the other prisoners surrendering themselves to the police.
Durban units have been sent to Pietermaritzburg to assist in capturing the escapees.
Jay Naicker, police spokesperson says:
The provincial commissioner himself is on the ground working with police officers from the district. We’ve also called in other reinforcements in the area to hunt down those who are still outstanding.
The escaped prisoners are said to have sentences ranging from petty crimes to more serious offenses like rape and murder.
As known the longer they remain free the more difficult they become to find, Naikcer says:
Time is of the essences which is why so much effort is being put in to hunting these guys down.
Hopefully the prisoners are caught soon and the people of Pietermaritzburg remain safe.
