The festive season is one of the most popular times for car accidents and road-related deaths in South Africa. Statistics have been released for the 2020 festive season and they have revealed a slight decline in road-related deaths.
Unfortunately, South Africa recorded 1 448 fatalities from 1 210 car accidents over the festive season.
The statistics revealed that fatalities decreased by 7% and car accidents declined by 10.3%.
The highest number of crashes and fatalities occurred on the N3 near Harrismith, N2 near Idutywa, N1 near Modimolle, R37 Mecklenburg and N12 near Potchefstroom.
The South African Department of Transport has, sadly, lost 33 traffic officers to COVID-19 related deaths and 500 traffic officers tested positive for the virus.
Mbalula announced that taxi drivers and metro police officers will receive the COVID-19 vaccines along with frontline workers.
The department is currently preparing for the Easter Weekend peak travel period.
