Freedom Front Plus Provincial leader, Corné Mulder, has now said that Western Cape can only be successful if it is declared independent from South Africa as an individual nation.
It does immediately make you want to chuckle when you think of it but according to Mulder, it could actually be a choice for the province.
While speaking to the Cape Town Press Club, Mulder said, "If I argued 12 months ago that the Western Cape should go for independence, people would have laughed and not listened at all. Many things can happen in 12 months. Why should the people of the Western Cape be satisfied with this incompetence, corruption and systematic collapse under the guise of a so-called wonderful democracy?"
He believes that the province is capable of becoming independent as it is the only province in 26 years that has never given the ANC a majority and seems to be ‘ideologically different’, according to Mulder, than the rest of the country.
Mulder also referred to the way capitalist beliefs are stronger in WC and its 13% contribution to the national GDP when discussing why this could be successful for the province.
Of course this vision has it's own problems. First of all, it's a separation from the rest of the country. No one likes divides, no one especially likes the one who is divided and we do live in a democracy after all.
Phumzile van Damme from the Democratic Alliance (DA) said earlier this year, "That this is something that requires debate is astounding. The Western Cape is part of South Africa. And always will be. And always should be. If you don’t want to live in South Africa, well don’t live in South Africa. It is ridiculous, divisive, regressive, exceptionalist, nationalist claptrap.”
Mulder believes that the public has not been responding to the ANC well and that currently there are in-depth discussions about the option of an independent Cape happening.
"This huge surge is a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the irrational and sometimes laughable regulations by the ANC government ... it’s clear why independence becomes a more and more attractive option for people of the Western Cape," said Mulder.
Should the province be declared it's independence, Mulder believes that economic growth, prosperity and equal opportunities for all will be seen and poverty will be eradicated.
Freedom Front Plus is South Africa's fifth largest political party. Mulder is the FF Plus Chief Whip and provincial leader in the Western Cape.
