President Biden Sworn In

After the most contested transfer of power in recent times, President Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. Former Senator Kamala Harris was sworn as Vice President.

He was Vice-President for eight years in the Obama Presidency and now the 78-year-old Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

The former Senator from California, Kamala Harris, who started her career as a lawyer and public prosecutor is now the first woman to hold the office of Vice President. She was sworn in by Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was her self a trailblazer as the first woman of colour to be appointed to the highest court.

Most of the surviving former Presidents were present. Barack Obama, George W Bush, Bill Clinton were all in attendance with their partners. Former President Jimmy Carter was unable to attend in person as the 96 year old has been staying near home in recent years. He is a strong supporter of President Joe Biden and sent well-wishes on the day.

Retiring Vice President Mike Pence was in attendance and also did not attend the farewell 'ceremony' for President Trump as he flew off to Florida on the morning of the inauguration.  Pence had been a strong supporter of Trump throughout his entire Presidency but in the last few days some daylight appeared between them.

As more details have surfaced of the riotous mob that attacked the Capital building last week it has become clear how dangerous the situation was and how badly things could have turned.  The incensed mob were chanting 'hang Mike Pence' and storming through the building, actively searching for Pence.  The Vice President was present and hiding with his family.  The mob had erected a gallows outside which would have allowed them to hang him if they had been able to got hold of him.

It was a stark reminder of how close the United States came to a bloody insurrection, and was possibly a clear signal to Pence that Donald Trump was not someone he could call a friend.  Up until then the lies about a stolen election just seemed to be a way for Trump to raise money from his supporters, but in that moment, the rhetoric could have turned to very violent deeds.

So Vice President Mike Pence chose to be on the right side of history as he took his place with the political establishment outside the Capitol building on the that cold Wednesday afternoon.
